The JATC helped present webinar on the vision for registered apprenticeship
The Office of Apprenticeship of the U.S. Department of Labor (DoL) knows they can rely on the Electrical Alliance and its Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee (JATC) as an example of a quality training program.
This is why they were selected to participate in DoL’s webinar, “A 21st Century Vision for Registered Apprenticeship (RA): A Brighter Future for American Workers and Employers.”
The Washington, D.C. JATC is sponsored by the Electrical Alliance, a cooperative effort between the Washington, D.C. Chapter of NECA and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 26. The JATC offers a comprehensive three- or five-year accredited telecommunications or electric apprenticeship that includes intensive classroom and on-site work. Once completed, journeymen electricians are constantly provided with continuing education on new processes that readies them for work on state-of-the-art systems.
The JATC was chosen to present because it received the 21st Century RA Trailblazer and Innovator award by the DoL in 2012. The webinar provided information on the future vision, goals, training procedures, and strategies for RA. Sean Myers, assistant director of the JATC, shared his knowledge on shaping education and workforce systems and examples of the 21st Century Vision for RA in action at the JATC during the December 12 program.
Myers said, “Real apprenticeship is designed around a “win-win” approach where the interests of job-seekers, existing employees, and employers are equally served. By participating in the DoL webinar and providing an example of what a true apprenticeship can be, I hope that others can add value to their apprenticeships to aid in positive growth.”
The JATC offers comprehensive training in all areas of the electrical industry including National Electrical Code, OSHA, switchgear, and more. The JATC was also the first in the area to provide the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program.
“I consider myself incredibly fortunate to work in a place where everything is done with the singular goal of maintaining and improving a genuine path to a dignified career that is rewarding on all levels. The opportunity we offer here today has been refined and polished for 72 years now by countless men and women who have each added to our understanding of what works,” Myers added.
