On October 3rd a group of industry professionals and others affiliated with the Electrical Alliance took a trip up to the Philadelphia Navy Yard to learn about the latest green building technologies.Penn State’s research facilities at the Navy Yard are a 1,200-acre urban development located on the waterfront committed to smart energy innovation and sustainability.
One of the largest non-military electrical-grids in the entire nation, the Navy Yard hosts a GridSTAR center that allows them to cultivate the type of talent that want to be champions for this type of technology.
The tour is part of an effort to increase marketplace recognition of Electrical Alliance members and the Electrical Alliance brand. We are focusing on creating greater awareness among local developers and key GCs of our commitment to best practices in the construction industry, including our deep involvement in green and sustainable building practices.

Tour attendees received an overview of The Consortium for Building Energy Innovation (CBEI) headquarters, an exclusive tour of the advanced energy retrofit and GridSTAR smart research center along with the research taking place there. CBEI is dedicated to creating pathways towards 50 percent energy reduction in existing buildings by 2030. Attendees will get a glimpse into the Immersive Construction (Icon) Laboratory navigating virtual 3-D building models, several energy efficient technologies such as passive and active chilled beams, automated lighting controls and a green roof for storm water management. Nearly all of the electrical work at the Navy Yard was performed by IBEW electricians.
