The Electrical Alliance has been a long-term supporter of SkillsUSA, a national partnership of students, teachers and the industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. It provides educational programs, events and competitions that support career and technical education in the nation’s classrooms.
This year’s Southern Maryland Skills USA competition was held on February 8 for the Industrial Motor Control competition and February 9 for the electrical construction wiring. The Industrial Motor controls competition was held at Northpoint High School with a total of 5 competitors, three from Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center and two from North Point High School. The students did an exceptional job competing in the competition. The Industrial Motor control had three sections: a written exam, drawing a ladder diagram from a narrative and the hands-on portion where they construct and wire a project.
The electrical construction wiring was held at Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center. This year’s competition had nine students from three different locations including North Point High School, Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center, and Calvert Career and Technology Center. The students had a two-part competition: The first part was a written exam, the second a hands-on portion.
Milwaukee Tool, a training partner and supporter, attended the competitions, sponsoring awards for the first, second and third place winners. They also provided gifts for all participants in the electrical construction wiring competition. Graybar, 3M, and Legrand donated large portions of materials for the competitions.
