Electrical Alliance contractors, in conjunction with the Local 26 Minority Coalition, a local chapter of the IBEW Electrical Workers Minority Caucus (EWMC), volunteered their services to perform much needed electrical work for a local nonprofit, So Others Might Eat (SOME).
More than 180 electricians from across the US and Canada attending the 21st Annual IBEW Electrical Workers Minority Caucus Conference held in Washington DC, arrived a day early to aid SOME, a community-based organization that helps the poor and homeless of our nation’s capital, by completing a total of 720 hours of community service work on five of SOME’s properties in three different DC Wards.
The Local 26 Minority Coalition, which includes members of Local Union 26, IBEW, is affiliated with the EWMC and supports its mission to encourage all IBEW members, particularly minorities, to be greater activists in community and political affairs and to be actively involved in human and civil rights organizations both within and outside of organized labor.
Dulles, VA-based Dynalectric, Upper Marlboro, MD-based Kelly Electric and Bowie, MD-based Power Solutions provided support by transporting workers, supplying materials and equipment to the projects (owned by SOME), located at 60 “O” St. and 71 “O” St., NW, #2 18th St., NE, 4065 Minnesota Ave., SE, 2125 18th St., SE and 2802 N. St., SE.
National IBEW and IBEW Local 26 electricians completed as much electrical work that time allowed which included replacing ceiling fans, plugs and switches, and installing exit lights, smoke detectors and thermostats.
Larry R. Greenhill, Sr., vice president of IBEW Local 26 and Local 26 Minority Coalition president said, “We appreciated the energy of the hundreds of members of the IBEW as well as Electrical Alliance employers, Dynalectric, Power Solutions and Kelly Electric. They undergirded the efforts of the EWMC’s Community Service Projects by willingly supplying thousands of dollars in money, materials and hours of manpower. We are extremely grateful.”
