On, Saturday, July 28, 2018, the Local Union 26 Minority Coalition (LU26MC) held its 10th Community Service Project (CSP) in partnership with the District of Columbia Housing Authority (DCHA) at the Kenilworth Parkside neighborhood in northeast Washington, DC. 31 participants from apprentices to Journeypersons to retirees who gave of their time on a hot, humid, sunny Saturday morning to come out and restore much needed porch lighting for the residents of Parkside. This is the 10th project in the last five years, a cumulative 1,046 hours of volunteer work.
Through the partnership, DCHA supplies the materials (including ladders) and the LU26MC provides the workers. The LU26MC considers this a “win-win” situation for both parties. The DCHA gets much needed work done – pro bono and the LU26MC gets to promote the Local through community outreach.
The next CSP, in partnership with the DCHA and in conjunction with the Electrical Workers’ Minority Caucus’ (EWMC) International Day of Service (IDOS), is scheduled for Saturday, November 17th from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm (location to be determined). All groups involved look forward to joining together as brothers and sisters to give their time for this worthwhile event.
EWMC is an umbrella organization of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) that was formed in 1974 by a handful of black, Hispanic and women business managers and business representatives from different districts of the IBEW and finally sanctioned in 1992 by constitutional convention.
