The IBEW Local 26 made headlines in the Washington Business Journal by commenting on Northern Virginia’s “secret” Data Center Industry.
Data Centers store computers that hold large quantities of data, often used by major technology companies. The article focuses on the state’s surprisingly large data center industry and the high level of confidentiality involved in maintaining high security on the sites.
In the article, Don Slaiman, political coordinator, spoke on behalf of the IBEW Local 26. He highlighted how the Data Center Industry has contributed to union membership by providing many high-paying trade jobs.
Slaiman explains that IBEW Local 26 members work on installing the sites and maintaining them. The Washington Business Journal quotes Slaiman, “We’re exponentially growing because of this industry…I would say, over 80% of all new investment in production in the state of Virginia since Covid has been in the data center industry.”
The Journal explains, “Slaiman estimated about 24 data center campuses are currently under construction or in design right now across Northern Virginia, all ranging quite a bit in size.”
