There’s room for everyone in the electrical trade. The Electrical Career Readiness Program helps young people from every background take their first step into it.
On August 28, the Washington, DC Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) proudly celebrated the seventh cohort to complete the program. Fourteen graduates earned their Certificates of Completion at the Universities at Shady Grove in Montgomery County, Maryland. Each graduate also received a tool bag equipped with essentials for electrical work, giving them practical support as they begin their careers.
The program gives young adults ages 18 to 25 the chance to earn while they learn and start building a career they’re proud of, no matter where they’re starting from. Over eight weeks, graduates worked full-time with Electrical Alliance contractors and attended weekly evening classes to learn the fundamentals of the trade. Classes covered electrical safety, reading blueprints, codes and permitting, along with time management and expectations on the job. They’re leaving with real job site experience and the confidence to take their next step toward an apprenticeship.
Participants also explored how their hands-on experience could support future studies in engineering, construction management, or business. Staff from the Universities at Shady Grove introduced related degree options and explained how starting at a community college before transferring could make a bachelor’s degree more affordable.
Instructor Christa Tichy started the program after her high school students asked how they could turn their interest in electrical work into a real career. As a single mom who went on to become Maryland’s first female master electrician, she knew how much the right path could change a life.
Christa’s path shows what’s possible when the trade opens its doors to everyone. That’s why the program especially encourages applicants who are immigrants, women, people of color, veterans, student athletes, and students.
Special thanks to Christa and to member contractors Power Solutions and Rosendin for providing invaluable hands-on training.
